Do You Need a Panel Upgrade for a Home EV Charger? A Quick Guide for North Jersey Homes

Not always. Most homes with 200-amp service have room for a Level 2 charger on its own 240-volt circuit. Homes on older 100-amp service may need a panel upgrade or a smart load-management device first. A load calculation done before any work starts tells you which applies.

What does a Level 2 charger need?

A Level 2 charger runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit and charges up to five times faster than plugging into a standard outlet. Because the circuit isn’t shared, it won’t overload anything else in the house. Most units, including the Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint and JuiceBox, can also be scheduled to charge overnight on off-peak rates.

How do I know if my panel can handle it?

A fast charger draws a heavy, continuous load for hours at a time. A load calculation adds that to everything your home already runs, such as central AC, an electric dryer or range, and any electric heat. A 100-amp panel that already powers electric heat or a dryer usually needs an upgrade to 200 amps. A 200-amp panel usually doesn’t.

Why install before winter?

EV batteries lose range and charge more slowly in the cold. Dependable overnight charging at home matters most in a North Jersey winter.

What does the installation involve?

  1. Panel capacity check
  2. Dedicated 240V circuit run
  3. Charger mounting
  4. Safety testing
  5. Permit closeout

Frequently asked questions

Can I install an EV charger myself?
No. It’s a high, continuous load with strict grounding requirements, so it needs a licensed electrician for safety and to keep the charger’s warranty valid.

Do I need a permit for an EV charger in New Jersey?
Yes. A new 240V circuit is permitted electrical work, and we file and close out the permit.

How much does a home EV charger installation cost?
It depends on how far the charger is from your panel and whether the panel needs work. We give an itemized quote after seeing the space.
