When I was 19 years old I came to the US from my native, war torn country, hoping to have an opportunity to build a life here in the United States.
I landed at the JFK airport with Electrical School diploma in my suitcase, however, I did not speak a word of English. Ok, I knew how to say ‘Hello’ and ‘Thank you’, but nothing beyond that.
For a while, I was working at odd jobs and very long hours, 7 days a week, while taking English classes and adjusting to my new life.
The big challenge was to get hired as an electrician. Nobody wanted to hire me due to my lack of experience as an electrician in the US. My electrical work experience back in my country, unfortunately, did not count here. After countless rejections, I finally met someone who was willing to give me a chance!
After finishing an apprenticeship and passing the required exams, I got my New Jersey Electrical License. That was a big day for me! I was now able to work for myself. What started as a single man operation, has fluctuated between 3-8 employees over the nearly twenty years since I first arrived the US.
