When to Replace Hardwired Smoke Detectors: A Fire Prevention Week Check for North Jersey Homes

How often should smoke detectors be replaced?
Replace every smoke alarm 10 years after the manufacture date printed on it. That applies to hardwired alarms too. The test button can still beep after the sensor inside has worn out. Fire Prevention Week runs October 4 to 10, 2026, which makes this a good week to check.
It matters more than people think. According to the NFPA, working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by about 60%. In a 2024 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission survey, 16% of households that believed their alarms worked found at least one problem when they tested them, and a third of households never test at all.
How do I tell how old my smoke detectors are?
Twist the alarm off its base and look at the back for a manufacture date. If you can’t find one, or the label has yellowed so much you can’t read it, assume the alarm is due. In the same CPSC survey, only about half of households knew their alarms’ age correctly.
Why does my hardwired smoke detector keep chirping after I changed the battery?
Hardwired alarms have a backup battery. If the chirp continues after a fresh battery, the most common reason is an end-of-life warning, meaning the unit itself needs replacing. Don’t pull it off the ceiling and leave the wires capped. That leaves the area unprotected and can break the connection to the other alarms in the house.
Can I replace a hardwired smoke detector with a battery one?
Generally, no. Fire officials in North Jersey towns treat hardwired alarms as a requirement that stays with the house. Wyckoff’s fire prevention office, for example, states that hardwired detectors cannot be converted to battery-operated ones, and that they must be less than 10 years old and working to pass a resale inspection.
What does New Jersey require for battery-only smoke alarms?
Since January 1, 2019, one- and two-family homes built before 1977 that are being sold or re-occupied must have 10-year sealed-battery smoke alarms wherever battery-only alarms are allowed, according to the NJ Department of Community Affairs. If you’re selling, our smoke detector certificate guide covers the rest of the inspection.
When should I call an electrician instead of swapping the alarm myself?
- The new alarm is a different brand. Hardwired alarms plug into a wiring harness, and connectors usually don’t fit across brands.
- Your alarms don’t all sound together. When you test one, every alarm in the house should go off. If they don’t, the interconnect wiring or signal is broken.
- You need alarms where none are wired. This comes up with a finished basement, a new bedroom or an addition.
- The alarm’s box is warm or discolored, or lights on the same circuit flicker.
- Every alarm in the house hit 10 years at once. Replacing the whole set in one visit keeps them compatible and on the same replacement schedule.
A 10-minute Fire Prevention Week check
- Press the test button on every alarm.
- Check the manufacture date on every alarm.
- Test one hardwired alarm and confirm all of them sound.
- Confirm there’s a working carbon monoxide alarm near the sleeping areas.
- Put a reminder on November 1, when the clocks change, to test the alarms again.
This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is safe charging of lithium-ion batteries. If you charge e-bikes, scooters or tool batteries in a garage or basement, make sure that area is covered by a working alarm.
Frequently asked questions
How often should hardwired smoke detectors be replaced in New Jersey?
Every 10 years from the manufacture date, the same as battery-only alarms.
Do I have to replace all my interconnected smoke detectors at once?
It isn’t always required, but new units have to work with the existing interconnect, and mixing brands usually doesn’t. Alarms installed at the same time also expire together, so replacing the whole set is usually the practical choice.
Is a chirping smoke detector an emergency?
Usually not. It’s a battery or end-of-life warning. A burning smell, smoke, or a buzzing sound from an alarm, outlet or panel is an emergency. Call 911 first, then call us at (973) 777-9202.
Do I need a permit to replace a hardwired smoke detector?
New wiring or new alarm locations is electrical work that may need a permit, depending on the scope. We handle that side when it applies.
