The Power Came Back On. Here’s When You Should Still Call an Electrician.

Most homeowners in North Jersey have the outage routine down. The lights go out, you check whether the neighbors are dark too, you report it, you wait. Then the power comes back and everyone moves on.

That last part is where people get into trouble.

The outage itself is rarely what damages your electrical system. The damage happens in the seconds when power is restored, and in the days afterward when a problem that started during the storm is quietly getting worse behind a wall. Below are the signs worth taking seriously — and the ones that mean stop what you're doing and call a licensed electrician.

Why restoration is harder on your home than the outage

When utility crews re-energize a line, voltage doesn't return in a smooth, gentle ramp. It can arrive as a spike. On top of that, every air conditioner, refrigerator, well pump, and freezer on the block tries to start at the same instant, which causes the voltage on the line to sag and then rebound.

Electronics tolerate this poorly. Sensitive equipment — furnace and boiler control boards, HVAC condensers, well pumps, garage door openers, smart thermostats, modems — often fails days or weeks later rather than immediately, which is why homeowners rarely connect the failure back to the storm.

This is the single best argument for a whole-house surge protective device installed at the panel. A power strip protects a laptop. It does nothing for the hardwired equipment that costs the most to replace.

The symptom that should end the conversation: lights bright in one room, dim in another

If some lights in your house are burning noticeably brighter than normal while others are dim or flickering — especially if this started after a storm — stop reading and call an electrician.

That pattern is the classic signature of an open neutral (sometimes called a lost neutral). Your home's 240-volt service is split into two 120-volt legs that share a neutral conductor. That neutral is what keeps both legs balanced at 120 volts. When it's damaged or disconnected, the two halves of your house stop being balanced against each other — one side can climb well above 120 volts while the other drops below it.

The practical result: lights on the over-voltage side get brighter and burn out fast, appliances on that side can be destroyed outright, and the condition presents a genuine shock and fire risk. It does not fix itself, and it will not necessarily trip a breaker. Breakers protect against overcurrent, not against this.

Other things that point the same direction:

  • Lights that brighten or dim when a large appliance cycles on
  • Multiple bulbs burning out in the same area in a short span
  • Two or three unrelated appliances failing around the same time
  • A buzzing or humming sound from the panel

Partial power: half the house is dead

If some circuits work and others are completely dead — or your 240-volt appliances specifically won't run (electric dryer, range, central AC, water heater) while your lights and outlets are fine — you've likely lost one of the two legs of your service.

This is not a breaker problem, and resetting breakers won't recover it. The cause is upstream: a failed service conductor, a damaged connection at the weatherhead, or a fault on the utility side. It needs diagnosis before anything gets reset or switched back on.

Look up at where the wires meet your house

After a storm with high wind or falling limbs, it's worth stepping outside and looking at the point where the utility's overhead wires attach to your home.

You're looking for: a conduit or mast that's visibly pulled away from the wall or leaning, the cable pulled taut at an odd angle, frayed or exposed conductor, a cracked or separated weatherhead, or a meter enclosure that's loose, scorched, or has a broken seal.

Never touch, pull on, or attempt to reposition any of it, and stay well clear of any downed line — treat every downed wire as live regardless of appearance. Report it to your utility first.

Who's responsible for fixing what

This is where a lot of homeowners lose time and money. As a general rule in New Jersey, the utility owns and repairs the service drop up to the point where it attaches to your house. From that attachment point inward — typically the weatherhead, the service entrance cable, the mast, and your panel — is the property owner's responsibility, and repairs require a licensed electrical contractor.

That split matters practically: utilities will often refuse to reconnect service until the homeowner-side equipment has been repaired and, where required, inspected. If your mast or service entrance is damaged, the sequence is electrician first, utility second — calling the utility repeatedly won't move it forward.

Breakers, GFCIs, and what's safe to reset yourself

Breakers: Resetting a tripped breaker once is reasonable. Push it fully to OFF first, then back to ON — a partially reset breaker is a common reason people think a breaker is faulty. If it trips again immediately, or if it trips again a second time, stop. A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job. It's reporting a fault, and forcing it back on repeatedly is how electrical fires start.

GFCI outlets: These commonly trip during outages and voltage irregularities, and a single tripped GFCI can kill several outlets downstream of it. If your bathroom, kitchen counter, garage, or outdoor outlets are dead but the breaker looks fine, look for a GFCI with a tripped reset button — including in less obvious places like a garage wall or a basement. If it won't reset, or resets and trips again, that's a fault worth investigating rather than ignoring.

Stop and call immediately if you notice any of these

  • A burning, acrid, or "fishy" plastic smell near outlets, switches, or the panel
  • An outlet, switch plate, or breaker that is warm or hot to the touch
  • Scorch marks, discoloration, or melted plastic on any device
  • Buzzing, crackling, or sizzling from a panel, outlet, or switch
  • Sparks when plugging anything in
  • Any water that has reached the panel, meter, or outlets

These are not wait-and-see items.

If you're running a portable generator

Two hazards cause the majority of generator deaths and injuries, and both are entirely preventable:

Carbon monoxide. Run a portable generator outdoors only, well away from the house, and never in a garage, breezeway, shed, or near an open window — even with the door open. CO is odorless, and generator CO poisoning kills people every storm season.

Backfeeding. Never connect a generator to your home by plugging it into a wall outlet. This pushes power backward onto the utility lines and can electrocute a lineworker working to restore your service. The safe method is a properly installed transfer switch or interlock, installed by a licensed electrician.

The honest summary

Not every post-storm quirk is an emergency. A single tripped breaker that resets and holds, or one GFCI that needed a push, is usually nothing.

But anything involving heat, smell, sparks, unbalanced brightness across the house, or missing power to half your circuits is not a wait-and-see situation. Those symptoms have real causes, and the causes don't resolve on their own.
